Talk by 渡辺一枝 “Listen to the Voices of Fukushima” In March 2011, the accident at TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station released a large amount of radioactive materials into the atmosphere. From October of that year, Fukushima Prefecture began a health survey of approximately 380,000 residents who were 18 or younger at the time of the accident. To date, more than 400 cases of thyroid cancer have been confirmed. Asserting that their thyroid cancers were caused by radiation released in the nuclear accident, eight young people have filed the “311 Children’s Thyroid Cancer Lawsuit” seeking damages from TEPCO. The first oral argument was held on May 26, 2022, and September 9, 2026 was the 19th hearing date. Amid the current climate in which the very fact that thyroid cancer is increasing is dismissed as a “harmful rumor” and subjected to social bashing, the camera captures Kohaku, the youngest plaintiff in this lawsuit, as she begins to speak in her own words, hoping to change that atmosphere. After the screening, there will be a talk by 白石草. Screening: “波打ち際に足跡を残す” (produced by OurPlanet-TV) Film “波打ち際に足跡を残す” Kohaku, who grew up in Hamadōri, Fukushima Prefecture, where the Kuroshio and Oyashio currents meet, was six years old at the time of the disaster. She remembers the violent shaking and fleeing by car, but recalls little else. Without even being able to say goodbye to her friends, she evacuated to Aizu. Her thyroid cancer was discovered when she was in junior high school. Currently in Fukushima Prefecture, this screening program has led to some 400 children being diagnosed with thyroid cancer. However, as the very fact that childhood thyroid cancer is increasing is branded as mere “rumor” and subjected to social backlash, those directly affected live with not only their names and faces hidden, but even their very existence concealed. Wishing to change that atmosphere, Kohaku, the youngest plaintiff in the thyroid cancer lawsuit, now stands before the camera and begins to speak in her own words.
