Director Kodama’s Lecture Series: A Century of the Theatre Museum Session 2 “Laying the Foundations of the Theatre Museum — Focusing on the Final Years of Tsubouchi Shoyo —” The Theatre Museum will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its opening in 2028. Our museum was established with the support of volunteers from various fields to commemorate Tsubouchi Shoyo’s seventieth birthday and the completion of his 40-volume translation of the Complete Works of “Shakespeare,” to which he devoted half his life. Since then, we have collected more than one million valuable materials related to theatre and film from Japan and around the world, and have made them available to the public through exhibitions, publications, and a digital archive. Over the course of a century, we have encountered many theatre practitioners and cultural figures and have maintained close ties with trends in the worlds of theatre and moving images. As part of the centennial celebrations, the museum director will present a lecture series that divides the museum’s diverse, century-long history into several periods and introduces distinctive holdings together with the currents of theatre and film in each era. Session 2 continues the story after the opening of the Theatre Museum, following on from Session 1. After the building was completed with the support of many donors, various measures were considered to lay the museum’s foundations, including maintenance and management, the collection of exhibition materials, and the organization of support groups. These developments will be discussed with a focus on the final years of Tsubouchi Shoyo. Instructor Ryuichi Kodama (Director, Waseda University Theatre Museum) Born in Hyogo Prefecture. SNS:https://x.com/eiseibunko / https://www.instagram.com/eiseibunko
