Science Program for High School Students — Be a University Student for a Day —
Hosting “The World of ‘Mathematics Research’ and ‘Mathematics Education’” (Faculty of Science Division I, Department of Mathematics)!
※ What is the Science Program for High School Students — Be a University Student for a Day —?
This program offers high school students an opportunity to focus on research dealing with various phenomena in the world and to experience “learning” at university. Participating students will encounter the “Why?” of the field they experience and aim to find material and hints for their future course choices.

・Title: “The World of ‘Mathematics Research’ and ‘Mathematics Education’”(Faculty of Science Division I, Department of Mathematics)
・Main contents:
*Class experience ① Multivariable Calculus (a required course for first-year students)
Instructor: Tomomi Yokota (Faculty of Science Division I Department of Mathematics Professor)
➁ Mathematics Education Theory II (a compulsory teacher-training course for third-year students)
Instructor: Hiroyuki Nakagawa (Faculty of Science Division I Department of Mathematics Professor)
*Campus cafeteria experience
*Research experience ① Tomomi Yokota Laboratory
② Mathematics Experience Hall
*Interaction with current students; roundtable discussion
・Highlights of this program
This program is the second installment of “The World of ‘Mathematics Research’ and ‘Mathematics Education’ (Faculty of Science Division I, Department of Mathematics)” held in July this year. This time as well, you will actually experience classes at 理科大.
One is “Multivariable Calculus (a required course for first-year students),” which extends the previous “Single-Variable Calculus” to multivariable functions. You will understand the topology of Euclidean space and the basic theory of partial derivatives, then proceed to the Frechet derivative of multivariable functions and the integration of multivariable functions. Although this course lies on the extension of the differentiation and integration studied in high school, it offers lectures that foster deep conceptual understanding as well as application and computational skills. We hope participants will once again experience a precise lecture in pure mathematics.
The other is “Mathematics Education Theory II (a compulsory teacher-training course for third-year students).” As with last time, this course is required to obtain a mathematics teaching license (junior high school and high school) at 理科大. Students will understand the educational goals of mathematics in junior and senior high schools and the qualities and abilities to be cultivated, deepen their understanding by relating them to the underlying academic fields, and acquire methods to enhance subject-teaching competence.
At noon you will experience the campus cafeteria; in the afternoon, there will be research experiences in the Yokota Laboratory and the Mathematics Experience Hall, and—as was popular last time—opportunities for interaction with current students and a roundtable discussion.
Don’t miss this opportunity at 理科大 to experience the world of “Mathematics Research” and “Mathematics Education”!
