Talk by 渡辺一枝 “Listen to the Voices of Fukushima” In March 2011, the accident at TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station released a large amount of radioactive materials into the atmosphere. From October of that year, Fukushima Prefecture began a health survey of approximately 380,000 residents who were 18 or younger at the time of the accident. To date, more than 400 cases of thyroid cancer have been confirmed. Asserting that their thyroid cancers were caused by radiation released in the nuclear accident, eight young people have filed the “311 Children’s Thyroid Cancer Lawsuit” seeking damages from TEPCO. The first oral argument was held on May 26, 2022, and September 9, 2026 was the 19th hearing date. Amid the current climate in which the very fact that thyroid cancer is increasing is dismissed as a “harmful rumor” and subjected to social bashing, the camera captures Kohaku, the youngest plaintiff in this lawsuit, as she begins to speak in her own words, hoping to change that atmosphere. After the screening, there will be a talk by 白石草. Screening: “波打ち際に足跡を残す” (produced by OurPlanet-TV) Film “波打ち際に足跡を残す” Kohaku, who grew up in Hamadōri, Fukushima Prefecture, where the Kuroshio and Oyashio currents meet, was six years old at the time of the disaster. She remembers the violent shaking and fleeing by car, but recalls little else. Without even being able to say goodbye to her friends, she evacuated to Aizu. Her thyroid cancer was discovered when she was in junior high school. Currently in Fukushima Prefecture, this screening program has led to some 400 children being diagnosed with thyroid cancer. However, as the very fact that childhood thyroid cancer is increasing is branded as mere “rumor” and subjected to social backlash, those directly affected live with not only their names and faces hidden, but even their very existence concealed. Wishing to change that atmosphere, Kohaku, the youngest plaintiff in the thyroid cancer lawsuit, now stands before the camera and begins to speak in her own words. Representative of OurPlanet-TV. While producing and distributing programs focused on topics not covered by the mass media, she also organizes video workshops for citizens. After March 11, 2011, she focused on covering exposure issues related to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident, receiving the 2012 Broadcasting Woman Award and the JCJ (Japan Congress of Journalists) Award. In 2014, she won the Science Journalists Award for “Video Document: 48 Hours of the TEPCO Teleconference.” In 2020, her continued coverage of thyroid cancer issues was recognized with the Tokyo Bar Association Human Rights Award. Her publications include many works such as “Reportage: Children 28 Years after Chernobyl—Learning from Ukraine’s Efforts” and “The Reality of ‘Containment’ of Exposure—From the Voices of Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Bikini, and Fukushima” (both Iwanami Booklets). Director Kodama’s Lecture Series: A Century of the Theatre Museum Session 2 “Laying the Foundations of the Theatre Museum — Focusing on the Final Years of Tsubouchi Shoyo —” The Theatre Museum will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its opening in 2028. Our museum was established with the support of volunteers from various fields to commemorate Tsubouchi Shoyo’s seventieth birthday and the completion of his 40-volume translation of the Complete Works of “Shakespeare,” to which he devoted half his life. Since then, we have collected more than one million valuable materials related to theatre and film from Japan and around the world, and have made them available to the public through exhibitions, publications, and a digital archive. Over the course of a century, we have encountered many theatre practitioners and cultural figures and have maintained close ties with trends in the worlds of theatre and moving images. As part of the centennial celebrations, the museum director will present a lecture series that divides the museum’s diverse, century-long history into several periods and introduces distinctive holdings together with the currents of theatre and film in each era. Session 2 continues the story after the opening of the Theatre Museum, following on from Session 1. After the building was completed with the support of many donors, various measures were considered to lay the museum’s foundations, including maintenance and management, the collection of exhibition materials, and the organization of support groups. These developments will be discussed with a focus on the final years of Tsubouchi Shoyo. Instructor Ryuichi Kodama (Director, Waseda University Theatre Museum) Born in Hyogo Prefecture. Professor, Faculty of Letters, Arts and Sciences, Waseda University. Director, Waseda University Theatre Museum. President, Kabuki Society. Specializes in kabuki studies and criticism. Science Program for High School Students — Be a University Student for a Day — Hosting “The World of ‘Mathematics Research’ and ‘Mathematics Education’” (Faculty of Science Division I, Department of Mathematics)! ※ What is the Science Program for High School Students — Be a University Student for a Day —? This program offers high school students an opportunity to focus on research dealing with various phenomena in the world and to experience “learning” at university. Participating students will encounter the “Why?” of the field they experience and aim to find material and hints for their future course choices. ※ Program ⇒ Flyer ・Title: “The World of ‘Mathematics Research’ and ‘Mathematics Education’”(Faculty of Science Division I, Department of Mathematics) ・Main contents: *Class experience ① Multivariable Calculus (a required course for first-year students) Instructor: Tomomi Yokota (Faculty of Science Division I Department of Mathematics Professor) ➁ Mathematics Education Theory II (a compulsory teacher-training course for third-year students) Instructor: Hiroyuki Nakagawa (Faculty of Science Division I Department of Mathematics Professor) *Campus cafeteria experience *Research experience ① Tomomi Yokota Laboratory ② Mathematics Experience Hall *Interaction with current students; roundtable discussion ・Highlights of this program This program is the second installment of “The World of ‘Mathematics Research’ and ‘Mathematics Education’ (Faculty of Science Division I, Department of Mathematics)” held in July this year. This time as well, you will actually experience classes at 理科大. One is “Multivariable Calculus (a required course for first-year students),” which extends the previous “Single-Variable Calculus” to multivariable functions. You will understand the topology of Euclidean space and the basic theory of partial derivatives, then proceed to the Frechet derivative of multivariable functions and the integration of multivariable functions. Although this course lies on the extension of the differentiation and integration studied in high school, it offers lectures that foster deep conceptual understanding as well as application and computational skills. We hope participants will once again experience a precise lecture in pure mathematics. The other is “Mathematics Education Theory II (a compulsory teacher-training course for third-year students).” As with last time, this course is required to obtain a mathematics teaching license (junior high school and high school) at 理科大. Students will understand the educational goals of mathematics in junior and senior high schools and the qualities and abilities to be cultivated, deepen their understanding by relating them to the underlying academic fields, and acquire methods to enhance subject-teaching competence. At noon you will experience the campus cafeteria; in the afternoon, there will be research experiences in the Yokota Laboratory and the Mathematics Experience Hall, and—as was popular last time—opportunities for interaction with current students and a roundtable discussion. Don’t miss this opportunity at 理科大 to experience the world of “Mathematics Research” and “Mathematics Education”! ※Date and time: Thursday, December 24, 2026, 10:00~15:00 (Check-in from 9:40) ※Venue: Tokyo University of Science, Kagurazaka Campus ※Eligible participants: 20 high school students (3rd-year junior high school students and junior/senior high school teachers may also apply) ※Participation fee: Free (lunch at your own expense) ※Application form ⇒ https://tus.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_2mdqSu9kAbnapmK ※Application deadline: Wednesday, December 16 After the deadline, we will send a confirmation slip and information on items to bring, etc., to the email address provided at registration.
